PRP Scalp Treatment
Platelet-rich plasma therapy for hair loss is a three-step medical treatment where the client’s own blood is drawn, processed and then injected into the scalp. The natural healing components found in PRP are made readily available to more shallow layers of the skin that the body has difficulty nourishing, which helps trigger natural hair growth, increase hair follicle thickness and improve its overall health.

In Detail
Platelet-rich plasma therapy is a skin resurfacing treatment that uses the body’s own healing mechanisms to achieve lasting natural results. The process begins with a technician drawing a small amount of blood from the arm; similar to having a blood test. A centrifuge is then used to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the red blood cells which are then micro-needled into the face or scalp through thousands of microscopic channels.
Platelets promote cell growth and regeneration and are generally about five times more concentrated in PRP than in regular blood. This PRP contains stem cells and growth factors, helping the skin to repair while also bringing antioxidant and hydrating properties. The treatment helps to reduce pore size and simultaneously unclog these pores, making the skin retain moisture and become more receptive to skin care products.
Once the plasma is in, it begins its work on rejuvenating your entire face, tightening wrinkled areas and smoothing the overall look. It’s able to do that because PRP’s essential chemical components stimulate collagen regeneration and skin tightening for a long term improvement. This improves skin elasticity and helps our skin function optimally, resulting in a healthier complexion with improved vitality. Another advantage is that it can be used in areas where fillers cannot reach or are unsafe to use, particularly under the eyes – an area prone to fine lines and wrinkles due to the thinness of the skin and is traditionally very difficult to treat effectively.
When it comes to hair loss, the platelets that are injected into the scalp reach the bottom of the hair follicle and stimulate a specialized population of cells named dermal papilla cells, which play a critical role in hair growth. This ultimately encourages hair regrowth on the scalp and slows down the loss of hair follicles.

Vampire Facial FAQ
Immediately after the procedure, you can expect to see some swelling and redness, which may may last around 12 – 24 hours. You may also experience some tenderness or bruising at the injection sites. There’s may be a little downtime, so we recommend having a clear schedule for the following day.
A small number of people may experience a temporary increase of pigmentation (especially if the skin is not protected from the sun’s rays), which usually resolves over the next few weeks.
The number of procedures required will vary depending on the individual goals and condition of the skin. While visible results are noticeable after a single treatment, we recommend a course of 3 – 5 treatments to see significant results.
You should start to see results within a week, although this varies by the individual. Roughly 80% of the results will be visible after 2 – 3 weeks, with full results taking effect in 6 – 8 weeks on average.
With PRP Scalp Treatment for hair loss, you can expect it to take between 4 – 6 months before seeing results.
While visible signs of aging may return over time, your results can last for up to 1 – 2 years and can easily be maintained with follow up treatments and a well planned skincare regimen.
We recommend a treatment every 4 – 6 weeks for the initial course. Maintenance sessions can be scheduled 1 – 2 times per year.
The vampire facial is very safe, as it is your body’s own blood being used, which means no risks of rejection or allergic reaction. The only real risk is contamination or infection, however at BodyBarn we use an enclosed extraction system that eliminates open-air transfer which significantly minimises these risks.
Mild discomfort can be expected during the treatment, since it involves drawing out blood initially. A gentle numbing cream can be used prior to the procedure to ensure minimal discomfort and pain during the micro-needling.
Two Weeks Before Treatment
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and try to avoid excessive sun exposure.
- Do not undergo abrasive skin treatments, aesthetic fillers, injectables or laser treatments.
Two Days Before Treatment
- Avoid alcohol or coffee consumption as this can dehydrate the skin and prevent blood from clotting.
- Avoid abrasive scrubs, exfoliants, facial masks, self-tanners, bleaching or skin-lightening agents. This includes prescription skincare products, such as adapalene, benzoyl peroxide, Retin-A or Tazorac.
- Avoid any active skin care, such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, AHA and BHA.
- Avoid waxing, electrolysis or any depilatory hair removal products or methods.
- Avoid blood thinning medication or auto-immune therapies (please consult with the physician first if unsure)
- Avoid anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, Motrin or Advil as these can interfere with the natural inflammatory process needed for skin rejuvenation.
- For those prone to cold sore breakouts – we advise using Zovirax, Valtrex or a similar medication a few days before and after treatment.
On The Day
- Drink lots of water as this will hydrate your skin.
- Remove make-up prior to facial treatment.
- Avoid shaving 4 hours before treatment.
Do not touch – Try to avoid touching the face for 6 hours after the treatment.
Ice Pack – You may use an ice pack to lessen the discomfort, bruising and swelling, but place a thin cloth like a dishtowel between the ice pack and your skin and apply only in 5-minute intervals.
Moisturise and hydrate – As vampire facials temporarily compromise your skin’s outer layer, it’s important to reinforce your skin with a moisturiser. Also, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration which can make your skin feel excessively tight. This will also help speed up the elimination of toxins.
Aftercare Ointments – Use only the advised aftercare ointments, applying with either a cotton bud or finger tips of thoroughly washed hands.
Apply SPF50 sunscreen – Your skin will be more exposed and susceptible to UV damage immediately post treatment. Refrain from prolonged direct sun exposure for the following weeks after a treatment if you can.
Avoid strenuous workouts, dry saunas & steam rooms – Increased blood circulation to the face can intensify warming, tingling, itching or redness immediately after treatment. Try to avoid these activities on the day of your treatment.
Don’t over-exfoliate – You should not use any exfoliants such as scrubs, brushes or exfoliating cleansers within 3 – 4 days of your treatment.
Avoid abrasive treatments – Avoid all abrasive treatments such as Microdermabrasion or HydraFacials for at least 2 weeks after your treatment.
Avoid makeup – Avoid makeup for 24 – 48 hours. If you must, mineral based makeups can be used to cover the facial redness that may occur.
Avoid blood thinners – You can help minimize bruising by avoiding blood thinners, like aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or green tea and some herbal supplements for the following week after your treatment.
Sleeping upright – For 1 – 2 days, sleeping on your back with your head somewhat elevated may help to lessen swelling and bruising.
