Dermapen Skin Needling
This minimally invasive procedure smooths and tightens the face for younger, healthier looking skin.
Also known as micro-needling, fractional needling or collagen induction therapy, this simple procedure uses very fine needles to break down old scar tissue and promote skin cell regeneration. This microtrauma improves blood flow in the skin and stimulates the production of elastin and collagen; both essential in maintaining firm, plump skin. The Derma Pen 4 offers an effective solution to fight signs of aging and improve the skin’s overall appearance.

Skin Needling
In Detail
During your skin needling treatment an electric pen with super fine needles is used to slide along the skin, penetrating the upper layers to a maximum depth of 2mm. This stimulates the rapid renewal and rejuvenation of the skin, providing you with long lasting corrective results. By causing these controlled micro wounds, the body is signaled to repair and as with any other wound, it increases blood flow and sends white blood cells to the area. As a result a significant amount of new elastin and collagen fibres is produced, both of which are vital in maintaining youthful, plump skin. This re-builds the skin’s structure and integrity, resulting in the skin becoming fuller with a reduction in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and scars.
In addition these superficial micro-channels mean that topical creams and serums can be penetrated deeper into the dermis, increasing their effectiveness in improving the overall appearance of the skin. Skin needling does not use heat and is therefore suitable for treatment on most skin types and can be used anywhere on the body.

Skin Needling FAQ
Immediately after the treatment you will notice redness and mild swelling similar to slight sunburn, which can last 1 – 2 days. You may also notice slight bruising or several tiny blood spots in small areas, which can last up to 1 – 3 days.
The number of treatments needed depends on the condition you are trying to target. For those simply looking for a more youthful looking appearance, a series of 3 – 5 treatments is usually sufficient. For clients treating deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks or acne scars, anywhere from 6 – 10 sessions may be required for optimal results.
Clients will see an immediate ‘glow’ to their skin with full results becoming visible within 2 – 4 weeks after the treatment. Lasting and more significant results will occur after 4 – 8 treatments and will continue to develop over the following 3 – 6 months.
Following a course of 4 – 10 treatments, you can expect results to last 12 – 15 months, depending on your skincare routine.
You can perform a new treatment safely every 4 – 6 weeks. To maintain these results, a refresher treatment can be performed every 6 – 12 months.
Yes, skin needling is safe for all skin types, since the dermis is not damaged throughout treatment. It is also safe on very sensitive regions, such as the under-eyes, neck or back of hands, which can be harder to address with other treatment methods.
Many clients describe the feeling as a bit of pressure and a mild tingling feeling. Your skin may be more sensitive in naturally thinner areas such as around the eyes and mouth. A topical numbing cream can be applied, which will minimise any discomfort during the treatment.
Two Weeks Before Treatment
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and try to avoid excessive sun exposure.
- Do not undergo abrasive skin treatments, aesthetic fillers, injectables or laser treatments.
Two Days Before Treatment
- Avoid alcohol or coffee consumption as this can dehydrate the skin.
- Avoid abrasive scrubs, exfoliants, facial masks, self-tanners, bleaching or skin-lightening agents. This includes prescription skincare products, such as adapalene, benzoyl peroxide, Retin-A or Tazorac.
- Avoid any active skin care, such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, AHA and BHA.
- Avoid waxing, electrolysis or any depilatory hair removal products or methods.
- No auto-immune therapies (please consult with the physician first)
- Avoid anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, Motrin or Advil as these can interfere with the natural inflammatory process needed for skin rejuvenation.
- For those prone to cold sore breakouts – we advise using Zovirax, Valtrex or a similar medication a few days before and after treatment.
On The Day
- Drink lots of water as this will hydrate your skin.
- Remove make-up prior to facial treatments.
- Avoid shaving 4 hours before treatment.
Do not touch – Try to avoid touching the treatment area for 6 hours after the treatment.
Ice pack – You may use an ice pack to lessen the discomfort, bruising and swelling, but place a thin cloth like a dishtowel between the ice pack and your skin and apply only in 5-minute intervals
Moisturise and hydrate – As Skin Needling temporarily compromises your skin’s outer layer, it’s important to reinforce your skin with a moisturiser. Also, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration which can make your skin feel excessively tight. This will also help speed up the elimination of toxins.
Aftercare Ointments – Use only the advised aftercare ointments, applying with either a cotton bud or finger tips of thoroughly washed hands.
Apply SPF50 sunscreen – Your skin will be more exposed and susceptible to UV damage immediately post treatment. Refrain from prolonged direct sun exposure for the following weeks after a treatment if you can.
Avoid strenuous workouts, dry saunas & steam rooms – Increased blood circulation to the face can intensify warming, tingling, itching or redness immediately after treatment. Try to avoid these activities on the day of your treatment.
Don’t over-exfoliate – You should not use any exfoliants such as scrubs, brushes or exfoliating cleansers within 3 – 4 days of your treatment.
Avoid abrasive treatments – Avoid all abrasive treatments such as Microdermabrasion or HydraFacials for at least 2 weeks after your treatment.
Avoid makeup – Avoid makeup for 24 – 48 hours. If you must, mineral based makeups can be used to cover the facial redness that may occur.
Avoid blood thinners – You can help minimize bruising by avoiding blood thinners, like aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), green tea and herbal supplements for the following week after your treatment.
Sleeping upright – For 1 – 2 days, sleeping on your back with your head somewhat elevated may help to lessen swelling and bruising.
