Semi-Permanent
In Detail
Sometimes referred to as micropigmentation or cosmetic tattooing, semi permanent makeup involves the artistic implantation of high grade pharmaceutical pigments into the dermal layer of the skin. It is designed to replicate the look of eyeliner, eyebrow pencil, lip liner and lipstick. The procedure is performed through a process generally known as micro pigmentation. The treatments are non-intrusive, using thin needles to place coloured hypoallergenic pigments into the skin. The pigments used are non reactive and virtually limitless in the choice of colours available.
Although the process is similar to tattooing, it’s not permanent and the effects begin to fade over a period of a few years. When done correctly, it’s a fabulous way to look and feel great by enhancing your best features. This procedure ultimately helps to enhance the colour and shape of one’s eyebrows, eyeliner or lips and can look so natural that you wouldn’t know that ‘mother nature’ didn’t make them. It is not intended to replace cosmetics entirely, and when you want to enjoy an evening out, you can apply as much additional make up as you desire. The colour is placed ‘in’ your skin and a more natural softer look emerges, leaving you with well framed eyebrows, wide alluring eyes and plump looking lips 24/7.

Semi-Permanent FAQ
You may have minimal redness and swelling for 1 – 2 days following the treatment. Initially the colour will look slightly darker, but will lighten down to the desired shade in 5 – 7 days. Usually it takes about 7 – 10 days for the skin to form and peel off.
You may notice some patches after your healing, but there’s no need to worry as these will be perfected with a second treatment. The amount of downtime needed depends on if you’re ok with being in public with visibly flaking skin during the healing process.
The color application process typically requires two appointments, however sometimes clients find that they achieve satisfactory results with a single treatment. The first appointment will lay the foundation and framework for the shape and color. The second treatment will complete the process by balancing the overall tone and intensifying the color.
At first, the pigmentation is noticeably darker with the intensity of the colour fading by 40 – 60% after the crust heals in 1 – 2 weeks. Once the healing process is complete, the pigmentation will continue to fade and settle after approximately 3 – 5 weeks.
Semi permanent make up usually lasts between 1 – 3 years before fading occurs. This varies among people and is dependent on age, skin type, the choice of colour and sun exposure.
It is best to wait 4 – 6 weeks to allow tissue healing and color stabilization before coming in for your second appointment. Once the desired results are achieved, we recommend a touch up appointment every 1 – 2 years to keep the color looking fresh.
This procedure is perfectly safe when performed correctly. Disposable microblades, sterile needles and gloves are used to ensure the strictest hygiene standards. We follow rigorous sterilisation guidelines so there is minimal risk of infection. All of our pigments are made of natural minerals, are non-allergenic, non-toxic and hypo-allergenic.
The main risk with semi-permanent makeup is getting sub-standard work done by an inexperienced aesthetician. We have extensive experience in repair work and can fix bad work.
Pain levels differ from person to person, however most clients find the procedure to be quite comfortable, with many describing it as a prickly sensation. A topical anaesthetic cream can be applied up to 60 minutes prior to treatment in order to minimise discomfort.
Two Weeks Before Treatment
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and try to avoid excessive sun exposure.
- Do not undergo abrasive skin treatments, aesthetic fillers, injectables or laser treatments.
Two Days Before Treatment
- Avoid waxing or tweezing for brows.
- Avoid excessive alcohol or coffee consumption as this can prevent blood clotting.
- Avoid abrasive scrubs, exfoliants, facial masks, self-tanners, bleaching or skin-lightening agents. This includes prescription skincare products, such as adapalene, benzoyl peroxide, Retin-A or Tazorac.
- Avoid any active skin care, such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, AHA and BHA.
- Avoid waxing, electrolysis or any depilatory hair removal products or methods.
- Avoid blood thinning medication or auto-immune therapies (please consult with the physician first if unsure).
- For those prone to cold sore breakouts – we advise using Zovirax, Valtrex or a similar medication a few days before and after treatment.
On The Day
- Drink lots of water as this will hydrate your skin.
- Remove make-up prior to treatment.
- Avoid shaving 4 hours before treatment.
- Lash extensions should be removed if treating eye lids or under-eyes.
Do not pick – Try to avoid touching the treatment area for 6 hours after the treatment and DO NOT pick at any scabbing that may occur over the following weeks. You must let it fall off naturally.
Avoid moisture – Try to avoid water contact altogether for at least a week; covering the treated area whilst bathing or showering. Do not allow the crust to soften by moisture; avoid swimming, soaking or steaming. If exposed to moisture, gently dab the area with a paper towel and leave it to air dry.
Apply SPF50 sunscreen – Your skin will be more exposed and susceptible to UV damage immediately post treatment. Refrain from prolonged direct sun exposure for the following weeks after a treatment if you can.
Don’t exfoliate – You should not use any exfoliants such as scrubs, brushes or exfoliating cleansers until there is no more crust
Avoid abrasive treatments – Avoid all abrasive treatments such as Microdermabrasion or HydraFacials for at least 2 weeks after your treatment.
Avoid makeup – Avoid makeup in the treated area for at least 1 week. If you must, mineral based makeups can be used to cover the facial redness that may occur.
Avoid blood thinners – You can help minimize bruising by avoiding blood thinners, like aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), green tea and herbal supplements for the following week after your treatment.
In case of infection – Use a cotton pad dampened with 25% hydrogen peroxide and press gently for sterilisation, then apply antibiotic ointment around the edge of the crust.
For lips – Be careful when eating spicy, salty or citrus foods; avoid them if possible. Drink through a straw to prevent contact with contaminants and be careful when brushing your teeth.
The following conditions must be disclosed prior to treatment.
- On blood thinning medication, such as warfarin, heparin or aspirin
- Any form of abrasive treatment, use of aesthetic fillers, injectables or laser treatments 2 weeks prior to treatment
- An active infection in the treatment area or skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema or rashes
