PicoWay Laser
In Detail
Tattoo Removal & Pigmentation
Picosecond laser technology is the most advanced and effective treatment available for laser tattoo removal. The treatment delivers very precise high-power laser energy in extremely short pulses (trillionths of a second) that create a shockwave that targets ink particles with significant impact. These pulses shatter the tattoo ink into minuscule particles and over several treatments, your tattoo fades as your body naturally removes these particles via the lymphatic system; much in the same way that a bruise fades over time.
Traditionally, laser tattoo removal methods deliver a constant, harsh beam of energy to the pigment that can be very painful; often causing damage or blistering in the skin. The PicoWay however has a photo-acoustic effect, breaking up the pigment quickly and completely with the power of sound energy, without burning or leaving any lasting effect on the skin (the pulses are so fast, the skin does not even register the heat). As a result, thermal damage is significantly reduced and the skin is not burned or blistered, making PicoWay an incredibly safe and effective treatment, with very little discomfort or downtime.
PicoWay is unique in that it utilises three laser wavelengths (532nm, 785nm & 1064nm), which means the entire spectrum of coloured inks and pigmentations can be treated; even the notoriously hard to tackle blue & purple shades. This versatility also makes the PicoWay laser highly effective in treating a large variety of pigmented lesions, such as sun damage, age spots, birthmarks, unwanted freckles and melasma. Thanks to the PicoWay, treating pigmentation is now incredibly safe and effective for all skin tones, and has considerably lower risk of long term side effects (the more commonly used thermal based lasers can easily make pigmentation issues worse in the long term).

Acne & Skin Rejuvenation
Acne scar treatment has always been clinically challenging for dermatologists. The golden standard for laser resurfacing has always been CO2 and Er:YAG, which is associated with severe side effects, significant downtime and risk of complications, along with a limited rate of success seen on darker skin tones. Laser induced optical breakdown (LIOB) has truly revolutionised this treatment, making PicoWay far superior to conventional fractional lasers in both efficacy and safety.
LIOB splits the single laser beam into a grid of tightly focused near-infrared laser pulses that induce deep intradermal cavitation. This non-thermal photomechanical effect results in a considerable increase in density and length of both collagen and elastin fibers. As such, it has been clinically shown to improve skin texture, acne scars, stretch-marks, enlarged pores and wrinkles, all without causing any notable damage to the epidermis. All in all, the PicoWay is a game-changer for darker skin tones, bringing new treatments to the table, that were never before available.
PicoWay Laser FAQ
Immediately after treatment, you will notice frosting on the area where the laser came in contact with the ink. You may experience temporary discoloration or reddening of the skin. This is accompanied by slight swelling around the treated area and it may feel slightly tender and sensitive to touch. You can expect these side effects to subside over the following days and there is no need for downtime.
Typically for tattoo removal, you can expect to see over 95% clearance after 4 – 6 treatments. On average, clients will need 5 – 8 sessions to completely remove a tattoo. Age, tatto size, colour, skin condition and the type and depth of the ink are all factors affect the number of sessions required.
For pigmented lesions such as freckles or birthmarks, typically 3 – 4 treatments is sufficient. When treating acne scars, you can expect significant results in 4 – 6 treatments. Mature stretch marks are not easily treated, so you might expect a 40% – 50% reduction in appearance after 4 – 5 treatments.
You will notice a degree of lightening immediately after the first treatment, however it is not uncommon for tattoos to appear darker after treatment and begin to fade 2 – 3 weeks later. This is when you can expect to see results, with continued improvements with each additional session until you reach your optimal results.
For scar and stretch-mark repair, you may see full results coming into effect over 2 – 3 months, as new collagen restructures.
The effects of the pico laser are permanent, however pigmented lesions can reoccur depending on various factors such as aging, sun exposure and your skincare routine.
Treatment intervals can be spaced 3 – 5 weeks apart, however for scarring or stretchmarks, 4 – 6 weeks may be more suitable. For those prone to hyperpigmentation, follow up sessions can be performed if and when new lesions form.
Yes, the PicoWay laser is very safe. It is non-thermal and uses multiple wavelengths in ultra-short pulses to shatter pigmentation through photo mechanical disruption, rather than relying on heat which can otherwise cause complications.
While each person tolerates pain differently, most patients say they experience mild discomfort similar to having the skin snapped with a rubber band. It is uncomfortable, but bearable and there is no pain or discomfort once the treatment is finished. Topical numbing cream can be applied up to 60 minutes prior to mitigate the pain.
Two Weeks Before Treatment
- Avoid waxing, electrolysis or any depilatory hair removal products or methods.
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and avoid excessive sun exposure or any kind of tanning product.
- Do not undergo abrasive skin treatments, aesthetic fillers, injectables or laser treatments.
- Avoid abrasive scrubs, exfoliants, facial masks, self-tanners, bleaching or skin-lightening agents. This includes prescription skincare products, such as adapalene, benzoyl peroxide, Retin-A or Tazorac.
Two Days Before Treatment
- Avoid alcohol or coffee consumption as this can prevent blood clotting.
- Avoid any active skin care, such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, AHA and BHA.
- Avoid blood thinning medication, such as Aspirin, Ginkgo Biloba or Vitamin E.
- Stop medications that induce photosensitivity (consult with your physician).
On The Day
- Shave the treatment area 4 – 24 hours before treatment. (No less than 4 hours)
- Do not apply any cream, oil or moisturisers on the treatment area.
- Remove make-up prior to facial treatments.
- We recommend eating a snack a few hours before treatment.
Do not pick – Try to avoid touching the treatment area for 6 hours after the treatment and DO NOT pick at any crusting that may occur over the following days.
Ice Pack – You may use an ice pack to lessen the discomfort, bruising and swelling, but place a thin cloth like a dishtowel between the ice pack and your skin and apply only in 5-minute intervals.
Aftercare Ointments – Use only the advised aftercare ointments, applying with either a cotton bud or finger tips of thoroughly washed hands.
Apply SPF50 sunscreen – Avoid the sun for 2 days and refrain from prolonged direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks after a treatment.
Avoid strenuous workouts, hot tubs, dry saunas & steam rooms – Increased blood circulation to the face can intensify warming, tingling, itching or redness. Try to avoid these activities for 2 – 3 days after treatment.
Avoid abrasive treatments – Avoid all abrasive treatments such as Microdermabrasion or Skin Needling for at least 2 weeks after your treatment. Also avoid irritants such as glycolics, acids or retinoids until the redness or swelling resolves.
The following conditions must be disclosed prior to treatment.
