Microdermabrasion
In Detail
Microdermabrasion is considered a light exfoliation as it removes only the very outermost dead skin cells. These outer layers typically contribute to the greater part of blemishes, pigmentation, roughness and wrinkles. By removing the top layer of skin, the body quickly rejuvenates to replace these lost skin cells with newer, healthy ones. This non-invasive procedure stimulates blood flow, increases cell production and in turn improves the skin’s elasticity and texture.
Microdermabrasion is an ideal choice for anyone looking for a gentle treatment that promotes radiant, younger looking skin. This specialised treatment provides a variety of benefits for many skin problems and is suitable for all skin types. It is a safe and gentle exfoliation treatment that accelerates the regeneration of new skin cells. By stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, it effectively plumps the skin and reveals a healthier looking complexion, resulting in a reduction of fine lines, skin texture refinement and age spots.

Microdermabrasion FAQ
You may experience mild itching, irritation, redness, increased sensitivity or slight peeling for 3 – 5 days. As microdermabrasion works on the very surface of the skin, there are very rarely any significant side effects, although tenderness or swelling can occur.
You will likely see improvements after your first treatment, however significant improvements are typically seen after 4 – 6 sessions.
Most clients see immediate results with a nice, clean, smooth feeling that is apparent after just one session. With increased collagen production, results will continue to improve over the following weeks to show a more vibrant and glowing complexion.
Skin renews on a 30-day cycle, which means you’ll start to see a decline in results at roughly this time. Every person’s skin is different however, and results may continue to last well beyond these 30 days.
Microdermabrasion can be done every 2 – 4 weeks, depending on your skin’s tolerance and desired cosmetic effects. Many choose to start with bi-weekly treatments for 3 – 6 sessions, then change to a monthly maintenance regimen.
There are virtually no side effects and it is safe on all skin tones and types. If you are sensitive to chemical peels, microdermabrasion is a particularly good alternative. For sensitive skin, the machine suction can be lowered to accommodate your sensitivity.
Some people describe it as a gritty facial massage and some even describe the feeling to the rough lick of a cat’s tongue. It may feel a little strange at first, but by no means painful.
Two Weeks Before Treatment
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and try to avoid excessive sun exposure.
- Do not undergo abrasive skin treatments, aesthetic fillers, injectables or laser treatments.
Two Days Before Treatment
- Avoid excessive alcohol or coffee consumption as this can dehydrate the skin.
- Avoid abrasive scrubs, exfoliants, facial masks, self-tanners, bleaching or skin-lightening agents. This includes prescription skincare products, such as adapalene, benzoyl peroxide, Retin-A or Tazorac.
- Avoid any active skin care, such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, AHA’s and BHA.
- Avoid waxing, electrolysis or any depilatory hair removal products or methods.
On The Day
- Drink lots of water as this will hydrate your skin.
- Remove make-up prior to facial treatments if possible.
- Avoid shaving 4 hours before treatment.
Washing the face – Allow up to 6 hours before washing with water in order to benefit most from the applied skincare products. Warm water may not feel as good as cool or cold water, which can help soothe the skin.
Moisturise and hydrate – As Microdermabrasion temporarily compromises your skin’s outer layer, it’s important to reinforce your skin with a moisturiser. Also, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration which can make your skin feel excessively tight. This will also help speed up the elimination of toxins.
Apply SPF50 sunscreen – Your skin will be more exposed and susceptible to UV damage immediately post treatment. Refrain from prolonged direct sun exposure for the following weeks after a treatment if you can.
Avoid strenuous workouts, dry saunas & steam rooms – Increased blood circulation to the face can intensify warming, tingling, itching or redness immediately after treatment. Try to avoid these activities on the day of your treatment.
Don’t over-exfoliate – Microdermabrasions are highly exfoliating, so you should not use any exfoliants such as scrubs, brushes or exfoliating cleansers within 3 – 4 days of your treatment.
Avoid abrasive treatments – Avoid all abrasive treatments such as Chemical Peels or HydraFacials for at least 2 weeks after your treatment.
Avoid makeup – It’s best to let your skin breath after your treatment, so try to avoid makeup that covers the skin for 24 hours if possible. Mineral based makeups can be used if you wish to cover facial redness that may occur.
