Microcurrent
Well known as a non-surgical facelift, facial muscles are stimulated to create renewed muscle memory.
Just like if you stop working out at the gym, when you don’t use your muscles, they will begin to lose definition. The wand used in this treatment emits a gentle microcurrent to the cells, penetrating deep into the connective tissue and firming 32 of the 53 facial muscles. This ‘facial fitness’ routine is a holistic alternative to botox and fillers for a more natural, younger-looking lifted face.

Microcurrent In Detail
Microcurrent is a non-invasive technology that utilises a low level of electricity to stimulate facial muscles. This pulsating current resonates with the body’s own bio-electrical exchanges taking place at the cellular level and is sub-sensory, making treatments comfortable and painless. Paired with proven application techniques, microcurrent technology offers a natural solution for skin that is firm, contoured and hydrated.
The body has a continual flow of resonating electrical impulses that transmit signals through living tissues. As the current passes, it triggers the release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) at the cellular level, the energy source for the key function of protein synthesis. This causes an increased production of collagen and elastin which smooths lines and softens wrinkles.
The tiny microcurrent’s main goal is to encourage the facial muscles to contract – firming and toning the muscles increasingly with regular treatments. It is often described as going to the gym, but for your face. In this process, muscles are re-educated, inflammation is reduced and nutritive serums penetrate better. The treatment has also been shown to improve blood circulation and trigger cellular renewal in the skin.
Microcurrent FAQ
After your treatment you may notice a firmness of the skin or a tightening of the muscle, almost like a mini facial workout. There is no inflammation or redness or any kind and normal day to day activities can be resumed immediately afterwards.
Microcurrent facials are a fabulous one time service, however long term improvements will only be seen with a series of treatments. This will vary according to age, but typically those under 40 years of age may require 6 – 12 treatments and those aged 50+ may need as many as 12 – 18 treatments in their initial series.
In general, clients usually see sustained improvements in lift after about 4 – 6 sessions, with significant lasting changes achieved after 15 – 18 sessions. As changes are gradual, these results are usually more natural looking than with many other cosmetic procedures.
A one-off facial works great, but the effects will not last longer than 1 – 2 days. The results of microcurrent are cumulative, so consistent treatments will continue to improve facial muscle tone. If monthly maintenance treatments are not followed, you can expect the results of your course to last up to 6 months.
It helps to view microcurrent treatments in the same way we view exercising the body. Once muscle memory is achieved with multiple treatments, the skin will hold its firmness.
For optimum results, the treatments should be done at least once a week. Those on a short timeline, such as an approaching wedding can be treated up to twice per week. Once satisfied with your progress, visits can be reduced to every 4 weeks to maintain results.
Yes, this treatment is completely safe with no harmful side effects being reported for well over 50 years.
The low level of electricity that mirrors the body’s own natural electrical current is subsensory, meaning treatments are comfortable and painless. Microcurrent therapy is so relaxing that some people even fall asleep during treatment.
Two Weeks Before Treatment
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and try to avoid excessive sun exposure.
- Do not undergo abrasive skin treatments, aesthetic fillers, injectables or laser treatments.
Two Days Before Treatment
- Avoid excessive alcohol or coffee consumption as this can dehydrate the skin.
- Avoid abrasive scrubs, exfoliants, facial masks, self-tanners, bleaching or skin-lightening agents. This includes prescription skincare products, such as adapalene, benzoyl peroxide, Retin-A or Tazorac.
- Avoid any active skin care, such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, AHA’s and BHA.
- Avoid waxing, electrolysis or any depilatory hair removal products or methods.
On The Day
- Drink lots of water as this will hydrate your skin.
- Remove make-up prior to your treatment.
- Don’t apply creams or oils to your skin before the treatment.
- Metal jewelry should be removed prior to the treatment.
Washing the face – Allow up to 6 hours before washing with water in order to benefit most from the applied skincare products.
Moisturise and hydrate – Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration which can make your skin feel excessively tight. This will also help speed up the elimination of toxins. Try to limit your consumption of caffeine and alcohol as these have a dehydrating effect on your skin.
Apply SPF50 sunscreen – Your skin will be more exposed and susceptible to UV damage immediately post treatment. Refrain from prolonged direct sun exposure for the following weeks after a treatment if you can.
Avoid strenuous workouts, dry saunas & steam rooms – Increased blood circulation to the face can intensify warming, tingling, itching or redness immediately after treatment. Try to avoid these activities on the day of your microdermabrasion treatment.
Avoid other skin treatments – Having other facial treatments will limit the time of beneficial ingredients on your skin and minimize the benefits of this treatment. It’s good to wait a day before performing other skin care treatments.
Avoid makeup – It’s best to let your skin breath after your treatment, so try to avoid makeup that covers the skin for 24 hours if possible. Mineral based makeups can be used if you wish to cover facial redness that may occur.
