Chemical Peel
In Detail
Over years, skin is exposed to a number of environmental stressors that can cause damage to the surface in a variety of ways. If you’ve experienced occasional sunburns, daily sun exposure, hormonal changes, stress or environmental pollution, then your skin may show signs of premature aging or occasional acne flares.
Our medi-aesthetic face peels involve the application of a chemical solution to your skin that deeply exfoliates the surface layers of the skin, forcing your body to quickly replenish it with new cells. The outermost epidermal layer is removed, accelerating the skin turnover and leaving you with a youthful glow that can last for months.
At BodyBarn, each medical skin peel is tailored to the individual, with consideration to skin tone and treatment needs. The treatment uses medical-grade products to deliver firmer skin. The strength of the peel determines the number of layers of skin peeled and inevitably, the final result.

Chemical Peel FAQ
Immediately after a chemical peel treatment, your skin may appear slightly red, similar to mild sunburn. You might have tingling sensation and your skin may feel slightly tight and smoother to the touch.
A thin layer of skin might begin peeling 3 days after the treatment and could last up to 7 – 10 days. You may be slightly more sensitive to certain products, along with exfoliating scrubs during this period.
The results from your first chemical peel will certainly be noticeable, however we recommend a course of 5 treatments to see significant results.
You’ll see the full results of a chemical peel immediately and will continue to improve over the next few days following the peel.
The results from a superficial chemical peel will typically last between 1 – 2 months. You can expect the Cosmo Peel to last longer, up to 3 months.
Superficial chemical peels do not require downtime and can therefore be performed monthly. A minimum of 2 weeks is needed between treatments to allow your skin to properly heal. Shorter intervals may be recommended for treating acne symptoms. The Cosmo Peel may require a minimum of 6 weeks between treatments and follow up treatments can be performed every 4 – 8 weeks.
This is a very safe procedure when performed by a qualified and experienced therapist.
No, the procedure is not painful, although you may experience a tingling sensation during and after your treatment.
Two Weeks Before Treatment
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and try to avoid excessive sun exposure.
- Do not undergo abrasive skin treatments, aesthetic fillers, injectables or laser treatments.
Two Days Before Treatment
- Avoid excessive alcohol or coffee consumption as this can dehydrate the skin.
- Avoid abrasive scrubs, exfoliants, facial masks, self-tanners, bleaching or skin-lightening agents. This includes prescription skincare products, such as adapalene, benzoyl peroxide, Retin-A or Tazorac.
- Avoid any active skin care, such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, AHA’s and BHA.
- Avoid waxing, electrolysis or any depilatory hair removal products or methods.
On The Day
- Drink lots of water as this will hydrate your skin.
- Remove make-up prior to facial treatments if possible.
- Don’t apply creams or oils to your skin before the treatment.
- Avoid shaving 4 hours before treatment.
Washing the face – Allow up to 6 hours before washing with water in order to benefit most from the applied skincare products. Warm water may not feel as good as cool or cold water, which can help soothe the skin.
Moisturise and hydrate – As chemical peels temporarily compromise your skin’s outer layer, it’s important to reinforce your skin with a moisturiser. Also, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration which can make your skin feel excessively tight. This will also help speed up the elimination of toxins.
Apply SPF50 sunscreen – Your skin will be more exposed and susceptible to UV damage immediately post treatment. Refrain from prolonged direct sun exposure for the following weeks after a treatment if you can.
Avoid strenuous workouts, dry saunas & steam rooms – Increased blood circulation to the face can intensify warming, tingling, itching or redness immediately after treatment. Try to avoid these activities on the day of your peel.
Don’t over-exfoliate – Peels are high-strength exfoliants, so you should not use any exfoliants such as scrubs, brushes or exfoliating cleansers within 3 – 4 days of your peel.
Avoid abrasive treatments – Avoid all abrasive treatments such as Microdermabrasion or HydraFacials for at least 2 weeks after your peel.
Avoid makeup – It’s best to let your skin breath after your treatment, so try to avoid makeup that covers the skin for 24 hours if possible. Mineral based makeups can be used if you wish to cover facial redness that may occur.
